Gift Guide: Stuff for the Writer/Reader

[fa icon="calendar"] Nov 20, 2018 9:00:00 AM / by Suzanne

We had so many ideas for gifting this year that we split them into three posts!

Here's what we've got:

Cute Stuff -  A collection of random stuff we like.

Sexy Stuff - Links to recommended adult toys and for you and/or your partner(s).

Stuff for the Writer/Reader - This is what you're currently reading! Bookish things, because duh.

These posts contain affiliate links, but we've not been paid to endorse anything.

Wear Your Writing

Chocolaticas

Hot Chocolate Design Chocolaticas in Notebook

I have these shoes in the "Unicorns and Rainbows" version and can confirm that they're comfortable. I wish they slipped on as the clasp is a little finicky, but that's just because I'm lazy. They're a great, cute flat and often on sale this time of year.

If you're looking for a slip-on, they've just rolled out a few styles! I'm rather fond of the science ones, but can you really pass up shoes with dinosaurs on them? They're on my own gift wish list.

Svaha, USA

As usual, Svaha has some excellent choices for you and your bookish gifting needs.

Their jewelry collection is geeky as hell, with STEAM galore.

proofreadingmarks

Proofreading Marks!

Available as a skirt or a dress

Other bookish options include Dewy Decimal Classification, Typewriter Keys, and Sentence Diagrams (purple!). Most of these also come in a skirt option.

And if you want to see their Arts & Humanities stuff all together, you can always sort by category.

A few more recommendations, which do not support us but do support other women in the community:

We Need Diverse Romance Shirts

Romancelandia Citizen Shirt (A portion of proceeds promote romance fiction via RWA)

Slayer of Words Collection, via Smart Bitches Trashy Books, in honor of Beverly Jenkins. Proceeds go to Doctors Without Borders.

Stuff For Their Writing Desk and Beyond

Comfortable, Affordable Bluetooth Headphones

These were recommended by Amazon, $29 (on a bit of a sale), and Bluetooth since my new phone doesn't have a headphone jack. (I hate you, Apple.) I'm pleased to report that they're super comfortable, rechargeable, and great at blocking sound. Plus, if you have frequent interruptions, you can pause and play from the headphones themselves. These don't have active noise-cancelling, but if you want to spend a few more $, you can get a very similar style here.

Buy them for yourself, for your friends, for that coworker who listens to terrible music in his cubicle.

Price: $30-40 depending on options

Dash Rice Cooker

This little pot is a multi-function marvel. It has an auto-shutoff and a 2 cup capacity, making it perfect for cooking rice or grains when you're distracted or cooking for two. While it might not be the thing for big batch cooking, it also doesn't take up a ton of space and is easy to clean. If you're looking to cook healthy and maybe not eat 3 bagels a day while writing... Just me?

It's currently sitting at $25-35 and comes in a few different colors.

Slippers

I'm not going to tell you which animal to get for yourself/your writing buds, but I do think all feet deserve cozy slippers... and why not make them cute and anti-slip? Bonus - these are machine washable.

putty-scentsPutty Scents

I bought this in lavender during a particularly stressful week and I've been using it during  most of my writing sessions. The smell is subtle but nice, and the putty has that stress-relief squish that you need for the moments when the words just aren't coming. Plus it helps me to not snack quite as much. My kids now have their own, in different scents, and they use them while reading or doing homework so that they don't bite their nails.

Perfect for stocking stuffers, holiday baskets, etc.

Around $3.95 at Barnes & Noble

wingardium-leviosaMoleskine Journals

Journals are always a great gift, even if they just look pretty on the shelf. Barnes & Noble is running a 20% off sale on all of the Moleskine journals, so now's a great time to stock up.

Might we suggest one of their Harry Potter limited editions?

For Your Warm (or Cold) Beverages

CamelBak Chute Water Bottle

This water bottle is small enough to fit in most cupholders, but large enough to hold .75 L of water ( about 25 oz.). Unlike the "Eddy" varieties, there's no straw or silicone to worry about cleaning and replacing. The cap stays put with a unique magnet flap, and the handle is ergonomic. It's easy to wash, BPA free, and the top screws off so I can pop ice inside if I need to. For someone who regularly dumps water over herself with her classic 1L Nalgene bottle? This is my new favorite. (And I haven't ruined a notebook yet!)

$10-14 in a variety of colors. Also available in a bigger size that doesn't fit in any of my cupholders.

big-deal-internet

Pretty much every mug that Effin Birds sells is going to be appropriate for your writer buds. Inappropriate for your grandmother and/or children, but what's a little swearing between family?

$20 each, with lots of non-mug options at Effin Birds' shop.

Fall of the Patriarchy MugOr check out Society6, which is full of art and mugs that I'd love to receive. This one in particular will speak to many of us.

This one has some rather stylish penises, if that's a thing you need.

Or keep it sapphic with one covered in vulvas. (Vulvae?)

And this one, which compliments your ass while wishing you a good day.

I could keep going, but let's just say that there are tons of mugs to choose from.

Ceramic mugs are around $16, while insulated travel mugs are around $29.

If wine is more the thing, these insulated wine tumblers from Simple Modern are beautiful and have an optional  spill-preventing lid.

Books

Books on craft for your writing friends, plus a few book recommendations for your reader friends.

Save the Cat! Writes a Novel

Amazon, Kobo, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble

This is a brand-new book that your fave writer might not have yet. It takes the classic screenwriting advice from Save the Cat! and adapts it specifically for novelists. Jessica Brody's newsletter is also worth signing up for, if you/your friends haven't yet.

Romancing the Beat

Amazon, Kobo, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble

This is a small, but immensely useful book for anyone interested in writing a romance novel. Gwen Hayes walks writers through the important "beats" of a romance, whether they're outlining, writing by the seat of their pants, or revising. It's even small enough to fit in many stockings! At only $6 in paperback, it's perfect as part of a gift pack for a writer.

Of Echoes Born

Andrea says:
For the quirky security guard at your kid's school who's always got a book in their back pocket, for the disabled youths in your life, the parents of queer teens... For anyone who loves stories! The book I want to buy for every library everywhere... [drumroll please] Of Echoes Born by Nathan Burgoine --a book that, to quote my own review, "gives joy and sex and laughter to characters across a spectrum of people often overlooked. It's a book I highly recommend reading, purchasing for your local libraries and youth organisations, and gifting to any queer kids and newly-out friends in your life." For real. Anyone who enjoys reading and has a heart --Give them this.

Andrea says: For the book-loving brown girls in your life, I have two words: Talia. Hibbert. And then I have five more words: Buy. Them. All. Her. Books. --Ideally just get them all the Talia Hibbert books you can at once, because there is actually no way that you can read yourself in a book the way she makes me feel SEEN so casually and wonderfully that my heart is racing at the romance but also it's going "we exist we exist we exist" the whole way through, and then just... move on with your life. It's scientifically impossible. You read one, you get them all. You just keep going. Blessed. Amen. I cannot express strongly enough the life-changing gift that Talia's books are.
