It's August! I've read a few and want to read a few others, so I'll be giving a few super short reviews below and then the usual list of upcoming releases. It's a big one.

Let me know what you're excited to read this month and again, if you want to join a readers-only community on Discord, I can get you an invite!

Books I've Read Early:

Disclosure: I received copies of these books from the publisher for review.

the-very-secret-society-of-irregular-witchesThe Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, by Sangu Mandanna - This is a delightful found family paranormal in which an adult South Asian British witch is hired to teach three young BIPOC witches how to control their powers. It's like Sound of Music/Mary Poppins and manages to be whimsical and full of heart without coming off as twee. Thanks to Aarya Marsden for the rec!

A Dreadful Splendor, by B.R. Myers - A Victorian gothic historical with a subtle romance and a spritualist heroine. Loved it!

bend-toward-the-sunBend Toward the Sun, by Jen Devon - An absolutely gorgeous, somewhat angsty contemporary romance full of longing. A traumatized male ob/gyn and a female botanist. Beautiful prose. Another Aarya rec.

A Taste of Gold and Iron, by Alexandra Rowland - One of the best romantic fantasy novels I've read. A nuanced, powerful depiction of panic disorder and anxiety, plus great character work and a romance to savor. There's a hairwashing scene that I promise will make you sigh. I'm told this is not a great pitch, but Tasha Suri endorsed this book so don't just take my word for it.

the-undertaking-of-hart-and-mercyThe Undertaking of Hart and Mercy, by Megan Bannen - This was fantastic. It's weird and fresh and the kind of fantasy romance that's not quite contemporary but manages humor and romance and... it's just so so good. There's a You've Got Mail element and an undertaker heroine and just please read it. Another Aarya rec because that's apparently all I'm reading these days.
