How do I love Raven? Let me count the ways...
1) Raven herself is a badass. She's been raised to take over for her father, the Pirate King, which has given her both her title (Pirate Princess) and a whole set of physical and strategic skills that she's determined to use to regain control of her family's pirate empire. (Long story short - her brothers are jerks.)
2) Raven is a heroine with flaws. She's written as a badass (see point 1) but also as a character with some issues to work out. She's impulsive, careless of her own safety, and sometimes unwilling to consider alternatives suggested by her crew. She's in love with one of her crewmates, but can't admit her feelings to the object of her affection or to herself. It's a whole thing. Yet, for all of these "masculine" traits, Raven is unapologetically female and uses her position to lift up women of all persuasions.
3) The crew. In a hilarious and pointed bit of social commentary, Raven decides to populate her crew with only women. The men who "apply" are lecherous, dismissive, or otherwise useless. At least this way, she and her crewmates won't be subjected to harassment or worse on their journey. The crew Raven assembles is comprised of, among others, a character reminiscent of a marshmallowy Brienne of Tarth, a black chemist skilled at blowing things up, a cartographer/navigator (this is the aforementioned love interest), and a thief who kinda falls for Raven herself. Writer Jeremy Whitley plays them off each other for comedic value, but also for surprising episodes of pathos and edge-of-your-seat adventure.
4) The love story. This is a slow burn, since Raven and Ximena have a complicated history that includes a serious betrayal. At the end of Book Three, some stuff happens that finally pushes Raven to admit, out loud, that she loves Ximena. Of course, in true Raven fashion, Ximena isn't nearby and Raven is having the hell beaten out of her by another woman at the time... but it still counts. The two of them have several obstacles to overcome, but I'm really rooting for them.
Speaking of 4... Arc 4 of Raven just started, which means you have three books (or a whole bunch of issues) to catch up on. If you're a completionist, you can start with Raven's introductory arc in Princeless, which is an amazing comic of its own, just without a romantic subplot. We've passed this series along to our daughters and several friends, but I do think it's aged up a bit from the original Princeless series. (Princeless is rated "All Ages" and Raven is "9+.")
TL;DR - Raven is amazing and everyone should be reading this. If you have the slightest interest in lady pirates kicking ass and falling in love, this is the series for you.
Saga is an epic space opera/fantasy comic book series created by writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Fiona Staples, published monthly by Image Comics. The series is heavily influenced by Star Wars, and based on ideas Vaughan conceived both as a child and as a parent. It depicts two lovers from long-warring extraterrestrial races, Alana and Marko, fleeing authorities from both sides of a galactic war as they struggle to care for their newborn daughter, Hazel, who occasionally narrates the series.
Saga is overwhelmingly popular for a reason. It's really damn good. It is romantic, depressing, gross, terrifying, hopeful, impressive... The characters are as diverse in personality as in our world, but the settings are nothing short of fantastic. It's Romeo & Juliet on an interplanetary scale. It's great, and I think everyone (above the age of say 16) should read it.
As for romance, Alanna and Marko are the central couple, and readers have seen them fall in love, fall out of love, be separated by space and time... and we're not done yet. I'm not calling this "definitely a romance" simply because theirs is more of a love story, rather than following a traditional romantic arc. Secondary romances abound, representing the full spectrum of beginnings and endings.

SHATTERED WARRIOR is a solidly YA graphic novel, but with lots of violence and, in Matt's words "an attempted rape scene and a boob." So, trigger warning for sexual assault and violence. (The breast in question is visible after a very subtle and consensual interlude.) All this has led to my R-rating, but I think it's totally appropriate for teens.
On to an actual review! SHATTERED WARRIOR is a modern take on classic themes of invasion, colonization, rebellion, and hope. The book includes a diverse cast, a bisexual hero, and acknowledgment of the ways in which privilege impacts our relationships and our approach to the world. Contains people doing awful things for the greater good, a good guy/bad guy in the Derichet establishment, and a heroine terrified of loving anyone (because they all die).
I picked up the book at least 90% because I love Molly Ostertag's art, so you can be sure that I found the artwork compelling. Because of the dirty, war-torn state of the humans and their environs, entire pages are rendered in shades of brown and gray. It's lovely and evocative. In her first graphic novel, writer Sharon Shinn has taken a step back and allowed panels to speak for themselves, not inserting dialogue or exposition where the setting can tell the story. It's a partnership I'd like to see more of.
Speaking of wanting more... My biggest gripe with the book is that it's one 246-page volume. The story is one of an epic struggle, and (spoiler?) ends with the beginning of a new war. I don't often say this, but I wish this was a duology or a trilogy. There aren't gaping plot holes, but certain plot points feel rushed, as does some emotional development.
Should you read it? If you want sci-fi with romantic elements and some people making hard choices and holding onto their humanity... yep. If not, I guess don't read it. I'm not really a sci-fi fan and I really enjoyed the book, however.
If anyone from First Second reads this - I would like a sequel with Lucy's story, please.

SLEEPLESS is a love story with a black princess (kind of) and her bodyguard who has sworn to not sleep (I think) in order to be her guard 24/7. It's written and illustrated by some really talented women. If you aren't sold yet, get thee to your local comic shop and flip through it.
The costuming looks renaissance-ish, with voluminous sleeves, high waistlines and billowing skirts and cloaks. The colors are rich and dark and it opens in a CRYPT. One of the first panels shows the two protagonists walking down a dark hallway full of bones, lit by a torch held aloft by the disembodied forearm bones of... someone.
It's spooky as all heck, but the two soon ascend to a coronation, where Poppy has to present a gift to the man replacing her late father, the former king. We quickly learn that all is not well, both because of her obvious apprehension about the coronation and because of looks and whispers as she approaches the throne. Her father's wife (not her mum) offers to take her away where she will be safe, but she says she needs to stay for her mother's return. Lastly? She's nearly assassinated.
And then it ends.
It's a hell of an issue and left me with so many questions. Who is trying to kill her and why? What's the history with her guard? Where is her mother and what is she doing there? In short - what is going on?! I can't wait to see what's next.

The compiled book I read (not the standalone issues) includes several short stories, each with a different artist and plot. Riley is smart, beautiful, daring, and kind. I would have gladly spent more time with her.
We've rated it "R" for lots of nudity, violence, and some post-coital snuggling. With several different art styles, you probably won't like every story visually, but the sometimes sad, sometimes humorous, sometimes gory tales are an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.
